Using Overhead Garage Storage To Make More Of Your Home
A lot of people today not only use their garage as a place to store their car but also a place to store all the items that no longer fit in their sheds or home. This quickly creates an area in your home that is filthy and full of clutter. If you don't want to create a home for a variety of different rodents and insects then you need to take the time to tidy things up a bit. One of the best ways to achieve this is through the use of garage storage systems.
However, there are a few things you should consider when you are looking at purchasing some for your own garage.
One of the very first things that you should consider would be sturdy shelves. You need to be sure that the Shelf that you are choosing is strong enough to hold a variety of different weights from the lightest to the heaviest.
You need to take the time to consider what the shelves are going to be used for and what you will be placing on them. There are storage systems that have a function for just about everything. There are even shelves that operate on a pulley system so that you will have the chance to take advantage of your overhead storage as well.
The next thing that you are going to want to consider is shelving that is both sleek and slim. This is a great choice if you are planning on a remodel and are looking at creating an attractive space. Your garage is actually one of the largest rooms in just about anyones home. Just think your typical two car garage is about 500 feet. That leaves you with plenty of room to store a lot of items without all the cluttered look that comes with it.
A well designed storage and shelving system allows you to be able to handle anything without worrying about it looking cluttered to the passerby. A lot of people love their garage too look just like the interior of their home neat and organized. Also to many the garage is the main entrance and exit to their home.
Finally you want to take the time to be practical. Having the best shelves for your storage needs does not mean that you have to literally go out and spend thousands of dollars. Although it is true that you can buy units and shelves that are already built you can save loads of money building them yourself. All you basically need to do is be sure that you are purchasing the right materials for the job. This should consist of either steel or wood along with the right screws and nails to obtain a tight fit. You can even look through your clutter to see if there any materials that you may be able to reuse.
Building a garage storage system does not have to be difficult nor does it have to cost you thousands of dollars. When you take the time to consider all the above steps you will have a great system in no time and with very little money spent.

What's the best way to build STRONG and attractive shelf?
In some magazine (probably while I was waiting at the dentist, which is why I can't find the article), I read an article about "looking up" if you didn't have enough book storage. The article suggested making a shelf 12 to 14 inches down from the ceiling to store extra books. I have a 10-foot section of wall where I'd like to do this, but I know it will have to be very strong be/c books are heavy and would be overhead. I'd also like it to look nice. Does anyone have suggestions or ideas about where to get plans? Thanks!
diddo the last answer but try using corbels instead of metal brackets. corbels are countertop and fireplace mantle supports. usually very decorative (i.e handcarved, stained, various species of woods) but can also be found in very simple designs. The corbels screw to the studs in the wall and the shelf can be screwed down to the corbels, make sure you use correct length fasteners so the screw does not "blow out" the finish side of the corbel. 3" screws work great for attaching to the studs
Can I create my own overhead garage storage space?
I have exposed rafters in my garage. I thought about the overhead storage cages by Hyloft or similar, but I wondered if since the rafters are exposed I could simply buy the wood (maybe 4x8 size) and create a shelf over the entire width of my 2-car garage.
If so what type of wood?
First determine if the rafters can support the weight you intend to put there. Many modern engineered rafters barely support the roof. In my old house the 2x12 rafters easily supported a 3/4" plywood floor and a ton of stuff.
