shelving help...please!?
We are remodeling our room and we just finished sheet rocking and priming and painting the room white (for now will go with color when we are completely done) and well we have this small closet that is built into the wall....the close is 4 feet wide and into the wall about 2 1/2 feet. I want to put a Shelf about 2 and a half feet up that is built right on the wall to set a tv on. We want the tv back in this little cubby hole like closet so its out of the way. I'm just wondering the best way to built this shelf. Should I just put a 2x4 along the two sides and screw a board on the top...with that even hold the TV? The TV is a 30/32 inch TV....any suggestions on how to built a strong sturdy shelf across the 4 foot chubby hole? Thanks so much!!!
Put 2x4's on each end of the closet with a length of 2x4 running across the back so that the back edge of your shelf has support. I would also put in vertical supports under the spot the tv will go. You can make the verticals the same width as the shelf and if you paint it out the shelf and the supports will look like a customized closet insert. Maybe even put two smaller shelves between the two vertical supports to house DVD's or other media that you may have. Using the vertical supports will ensure that your shelf will not sag in the middle after a bit of time. Even if you just have the back 2x4 for extra support the front edge of the shelf will sag. By using the supports that I described you can use a 5/8 inch plywood for the shelf and save yourself a bit of money. For the vertical supports you can use 1x2's on the front edges with the 5/8 inch plywood as the sides to create the cubby shelves. The 1x2's will give the shelving a beefier look and when painted will not look like plywood and 2x4's nailed into a closet. Good Luck
